Rocky Bayou to add football in 2008

NICEVILLE — There are a few new faces among the coaching staff at Rocky Bayou Christian these days.
The Knights have added five new members to their staff, including athletic director John Reaves.
But that is not the biggest news for the Knights.
In 2008, Rocky Bayou will begin playing football. The Knights will be an independent school for at least their first season of play, and Reaves will be the coach.
“The reaction has been overwhelmingly supportive,” he said.
Reaves will also coach weightlifting this spring, and says being an independent for a season, or perhaps more, will be good as the players get used to playing at a varsity level.
“I like the freedom of it,” Reaves said. “It gives us a chance to test the waters and see how we do.”
Along with Reaves, the other new coaches for RBCS are Elizabeth Medlock (volleyball), Mark Jackson (boys basketball), Jared Neighbors (girls basketball) and Rich Grote (boys golf).
Reaves said he likes the new group of coaches because of their energy in getting kids to come out as well as their passion for the sport.
He also likes the enthusiasm there seems to be for a football program. In a survey the school did with boys in grades 7-11, 70 percent said they would like to be affiliated with the program. Fifty boys have already said they would like to play in the spring when the team first begins practice.
As to who the Knights will play, and where they will play, those details have yet to be figured out. There are plans to renovate the RBCS athletic fields in the future to build a stadium on campus.
For now, they are just happy to have the opportunity to play.
“Everyone is excited,” Reaves said.
